Having been born and raised in Brazil I had the opportunity to spend many unforgettable vacations in several wonderful beaches areas of that country. As a child one of my favorite things at the beach was to build sand castles. I spent hours building those castles and always trying to improve my building techniques. Even when a wave from the sea or a passerby would destroy it, I would follow on for hours building newer and more spectacular ones.
Despite my efforts to increase the durability and life of my castles they would always end up in the same manner, a little pile of sand inevitably been blown away. Even so, at every new opportunity my imagination would push me into building it again.
As adults we cannot lose the imagination or the drive to follow on and build our dreams like children do. However it is fundamental to choose a more solid base over which to build our life and more adequate material to use in that construction, otherwise our efforts will vanish like castles on the sand.
Jesus reminds us in his Word that constructions are struck by falling rain, overflowing rivers, and blowing winds and likewise the same happens to our life. To this thought the Master adds that the house built on the rock endures but the one built on sand is destroyed.
It wonderful to know that we don’t need to build alone, the Master himself can guide us through this process recommending at each stage the best alternative to be followed. This means that if we accept his orientation our dreams can materialize and endure. This way our live will be much more significant than a castle on the sand, it will be a lighthouse on the rock.
